Interview with Ahmet Murat Cetin

Ahmet Murat Cetin is one of our Regulatory masterminds who work closely with the ITU to ensure that Rivada follows all the processes required to coordinate with other satellite operators.

Murat has 25 years of experience. He started his career as a satellite control engineer, then moved into regulatory work and has had a very successful career in this area. His engineering background is a great advantage as he works a lot with the programme department and understands the complex technical details to make the right decisions for Rivada.

Senior VP Regulatory & Spectrum Development,
Regulatory Team

What’s your role in the Regulatory Team?

What fascinates you about Regulatory?

In 2019, the ITU created some additional rules to be followed. They wanted to make sure that the emitted frequencies would be used by companies, so they set milestones for companies to launch their satellites. This is an interesting development that has brought even more attention to Regulatory.

This project is built on spectrum rights that we obtained very early on. I make sure we keep them and advise the teams on new opportunities or potential threats. I also lead the technical negotiations with other operators so that we can all exist for the benefit of the customers. I am also leading the preparations for the ITU WRC.

It never gets boring. As technology evolves, it brings new topics to our work. In every cycle, there are always new challenges that keep our motivation high. I very much enjoy challenging work and being creative to find solutions.

How did you get from engineering to regulatory?

How do you spend your spare time?

When the company I was working for at the time was privatized, all the engineers in the regulatory team were gone. At that point, it was proposed that I take over as head of the regulatory department when I was also looking for something new. Since then, I have enjoyed specializing in space regulations.

I’m an engineer at heart. When I look at something, I always think about how I can improve it. Every now and then I find something at home that I can fix, change or improve. I also like to discover new developments in the software world and keep up to date. I think I'm one of the early adopters of some of today's famous software platforms or tools. I was even called by a big software company because I was the first customer of a service they offered in my region".
